Chapter Eleven

After a few sniffs and a handful of circling each other, Cupcake and Baloo became fast friends. It seemed the puppy’s transition was going to be easier than Felicity’s. That was something to celebrate. Wanting to share her pleasure with Ethan, Keely glanced over at him.

He wasn’t watching the dogs. He was watching her, closely. And yet his expression was carefully neutral.

“Thanks again for letting Cupcake bunk at your house.”

“No problem.” He flashed a smile, the one that turned her stomach into a trampoline for an entire family of butterflies. “I kind of like the little guy.”

Reaching down, he scratched the puppy’s head.

“Don’t get too attached, Dr. Scott. Cupcake is an O’Toole man through and through.”

Ethan’s smile moved into his eyes. “Please tell me you’re going to change his name.”

“I’ll let Felicity decide.”

“I suppose that makes sense.” Eyes locked with hers, he straightened. He took a step toward her, just one, yet the air in the room suddenly changed, becoming charged with energy.

Their relationship was shifting into new territory, though she doubted neither of them would admit that out loud.

He took another step. She took one herself, until they were standing face-to-face, mere inches apart, so close that she could see the countless shades of blue in his eyes.

“Is this a bad idea?” she asked him.

“Probably.”

Not sure if they were talking about the puppy, or something else entirely, she held her position.

Ethan remained unmoving, as well. The tension was thick in the air between them, but not altogether unpleasant.

“We should head back to work.”

Breathless for no good reason, Keely nodded. The silent standoff continued. Neither of them moved.

Then Ethan’s head drew a shade closer. He was going to kiss her. She didn’t know whether to be overjoyed or terrified. Holding her breath, she remained steady, waiting, watching.

His lips touched hers, barely a whisper; then he snapped back and put a polite distance between them. “I’ll...uh, get that key I promised.”

She choked on a breathless sigh. “I’ll wait here.”

The air felt lighter with him out of the room. Staring at nothing in particular, she reached up and touched her mouth. Ethan had barely pressed his lips to hers and yet the moment had felt special, life altering.

Needing something to do with her hands, she reached down to pet the puppy. Ethan returned with the key and handed it to her.

Their fingers were still touching when Ryder shuffled into the kitchen. Keely jumped back, away from Ethan. She didn’t know why she felt so guilty. Ryder hadn’t even noticed her yet.

Sleep-rumpled, his hair sticking out from nearly every angle, Ryder let out a jaw-cracking yawn. He wore faded jeans that looked a million years old, an equally ancient sweatshirt and a tired grimace.

The Scott men looked alike, but this one favored Ethan the most. They had the same cobalt-blue eyes, long black eyelashes and bold slash of eyebrows beneath a full head of black hair.

Ryder swept a glance over the room in general. “Morning.”

Voice strained, Keely responded in kind.

“Keely?” His gaze narrowed, and he glanced from Keely to Ethan and then back to her.
